This all-purpose home cleaner upcycles food waste, taking what would have otherwise been sent to landfills and turning it into an effective home cleaner. Food waste in landfills creates huge amounts of greenhouse gas emissions during its life cycle. Because of food waste, landfills are the third largest producer of methane, a gas 30x more potent than CO2. Food waste also represents a major loss of water: inside the 1.3 billion tons of food wasted globally each year is 45 trillion gallons of water.

The aluminum in the bottle is far more easily recyclable than the standard plastic bottle cleaner. Veles also conserves water by extracting water from food waste (water makes up more than 75% of cleaning products) instead of wasting municipal tap water. Most other cleaners require ingredients sourced from all over the world, which requires a lot of energy to move around, while Veles sources the vast majority of its ingredients from local food waste, cutting down on unnecessary emissions.

97% made of food waste, plus water, acetic acid, lactic acid, alcohol, and essential oils for fragrance (decyl glucoside, a biodegradable fragrance stabilizer from plants).

Packaging: Cleaner comes in an aluminum bottle. The sprayer is made of transparent plastic, which has the highest material value compared to other plastics.

End of life: Once you've used the product up, you can  reuse the aluminum bottle (maybe as a plant spritzer) or recycle the aluminum, which is 100% recyclable.

*What does Veles smell like? Veles is made with lavender, peppermint and bergamot low-impact essential oils.

*Where does Veles source food waste from? Their main source of food waste comes from Google's Manhattan office. As the company continues to grow, Veles will source from other businesses and municipalities.

*Why not sell a concentrate? While concentrates reduce packaging, they result in increased waste of tap water. The carbon footprint associated with moving, treating, and heating water in the US is 290+ million metric tons per year. In addition, studies have found that concentrated cleaners mixed with hard water leave streaks behind (less effective). Veles chose to create a more sustainable and renewable product from end-to-end.

All-Purpose Household Cleaner

The all-purpose (and better purpose) cleaner proven to remove grease, germs, and grime. Veles is the world’s first closed-loop cleaning product scientifically derived from food waste. Did you know food waste is also a useful source of organic compounds and water? Veles isolates those elements to make common chemicals and ingredients, which are formulated into an all-purpose cleaner.

If every household in the U.S. traded in their usual cleaner (that includes the ‘green’ ones!) for veles, we could address some major issues. Switching to a better cleaner would be equivalent to 2.5 million tons of food waste diverted from landfills, 7 million tons of GHG emissions removed from the atmosphere, and 1.5 million vehicles taken off the road for an entire year!

Weight: 1 lb

About the maker: According to Veles, "every bottle we make reduces greenhouse gas emissions by offering an alternative to landfill disposal for wasted food. Simplifying the supply chain and reducing raw materials for manufacturing provides additional environmental benefits beyond any other traditionally made product. We made Veles for anyone looking to reduce their impact and make more sustainable choices."
